The apple, an emblematic fruit of the vegetable garden and an iconic motif of still life, forms the central foundation of the painting. The work also draws technical references from the pictorial solutions explored by the English artist Howard Hodgkin, particularly in his practice of the late 1990s. This piece was painted in anticipation of an exhibition planned at the Potager du Roi in Versailles.
